I hit rock bottom, everyone thought I had it all

"How rock bottom do you have to let me hit before you actually help me?"

Brad’s words hung in the air for a while after we wrapped. They were all too familiar in this industry. That moment where you realise you’ve been carrying it all, quietly hoping someone will notice, and then getting angry when they don’t. We sat with Brad McEwan again, a regular on the podcast, and this chat went straight past the surface stuff and into the parts most people keep hidden.

From the outside, Brad looks like the guy who’s got it sorted. Business moving, family there, good people around him. But he spoke honestly about what was happening underneath, and how quickly “I’m fine” can turn into snapping at work, shutting down at home, and feeling like you’re watching yourself unravel in slow motion. In building, we’re trained to push through, solve it, work harder, and keep it moving. The problem is that approach works right up until it doesn’t, and then the cost is way bigger than a sore back or a rough week.

A big part of Brad’s turning point was realising that grit without communication is a fast track to isolation. When you don’t have the words for what’s going on, or you don’t feel safe saying it, everything gets louder. Stress shows up in your relationships, your patience, your sleep, your confidence, and suddenly you’re reacting to everyone around you while telling yourself you should be able to handle it. He talked through what helped, including getting proper psychological support and learning tools that actually worked in real life, not just in theory.

This episode also messes with the usual definition of “tough”. Asking for help before you hit the floor, making changes even when it feels embarrassing, and being honest about what you can and can’t carry anymore. At one point, the reminder was simple and it landed hard: you’re allowed to feel shit. It’s not a permission slip to stay stuck, but it’s more a starting point to do something different.

Then there’s the future bit. What happens after rock bottom, when you’re back on your feet, but you don’t want to build the same life again. Brad shared what it looks like to step back, reconnect with what matters, and make space for things outside the grind so work doesn’t become the only place you feel useful. Because mental health and career satisfaction are tied together, whether we like it or not, and balance is not a fluffy concept when your whole system is running on empty.

If this conversation sparks anything for you, take it seriously. Check in with someone. Say the thing out loud. Get support before you’re forced into it. Looking after yourself is not a detour from success; it’s the only way it lasts.
